eCO-SENSE – Biophotovoltaic Powered Soil Sensors

Project Summary

We aim to create a simple, low power prototype that contains a maximum of four working sensors (pH, temperature & humidity and salinity) for the use in agricultural industries by farmers. The aim is to power this device with a biophotovoltaic cell that, in essence, generates electricity from the growth of algae or plants (photosynthetic organisms). With this technology, we hope to address two themes, the first being the implementation of low powered, low cost sensors for soil metrics in developing economies (India) that can enable better crop management and therefore yields, and secondly, we aim to power this sustainably with the BPV, mitigating the use of solar cells or batteries that are intermittent, costly and must be replaced over time.
